So, living in Korea has its perks, and one of the great perks is that Avengers came out a week earlier here than it did in the states. This is a spoiler free review of the new Avengers movie, and next week I’ll be writing a spoiler filled review.

First off, I had a great time watching this movie. It sums up what a summer blockbuster is, and also was a great end to the phase two line up of Marvel films. Now, I know that Ant-Man is the last movie in phase two, but I’m going to assume that’s more of an epilogue than the final chapter.

Compared to the first film, I thought the action scenes were far superior and frequent to the point that it felt like a roller coaster ride of a movie. It’s pushing pace constantly forward and oddly enough it’s moving with a lot more humor. I say oddly enough because the film themes and character exploration is a lot darker here than it was in the Avengers. Joss Whedon stated multiple times that he wanted to make a smaller film showing “wounds” of the characters, and I actually think he did somewhat achieve that. We get a lot more characterization in this film. Everything from motivations, personal demons to secrets ,which gives shades to these Marvel characters that we haven’t seen yet.

As acting goes, James Spader is just fantastic. I could watch Ultron talk all day and not be bored. As a villain, he just made a lot of sense, and because of his disdain towards the avengers, there was always a level of tension when he was on screen. Also, Jeremy Renner gets to shine a lot in this film compared to him basically being a drone in the previous installment. I can’t get too into detail without spoiling some of my favorite Hawkeye moments, but if you are a fan of Jeremy Renner, he does such a great job. Finally, most of the cast had some great moments in the film that really showed their acting chops.

From beginning to end, I really enjoyed the film for what it was, which is basically an entertaining two hour movie with some great action scenes with characters that we have been with for the last several years. Is it a perfect movie? By no means. There are some stuff that bothered me a bit, and also there’s a bit of a balancing issue with so many characters in play. However, I put that more on the fact that this is such a large assamble piece and not on Joss Whedon himself. When I do a spoiler filled review, I will dive into specific scenes that I loved and scenes that did slightly bother me. In the end, did I think it was better than the first Avengers? Yes, I think it is better. I think they showed more characterization in this film, and also I think that the action scenes were just incredible. However, I can also see how people might like the first one better, and I’m sure there will be debate on which was better in the near future.

If you also have seen the Avengers, comment below and tell me what you think.

Buy / Rent / Skip? I’m going to definitely BUY this movie when it comes.
